A board that converts a USB connection into 5V serial transmit and receive that can be connected straight to the Arduino Mini or any other board with an FTDI cable-compatible connector. The pinouts on the connector are compatible with a standard FTDI header (as well as the Adafruit and Sparkfun USB-Serial adaptors).

The device features the Atmega16U2 programmed as a USB-to-serial converter, the same chip found on the Arduino Uno. The module has an ISCP interface, allowing the reprogramming of the chip when placed in DFU mode.

Once you become more familiar with Arduino it can be tempting to want to integrate a basic Arduino circuit into a more permenant design to keep costs down for larger projects and installations. The USB to Serial converter on all Arduino boards is often only used for programming but adds significantly to the cost and complexity of building an Arduino into your project. By adding an ICSP header a so-called 'FTDI' header you can easily program the Arduino bootloader onto any raw ATMEGA328 chip and then program or talk serial to the Arduino as usual through this board.
