The Adafruit I2C/SPI character LCD backpack reduces the number of pins needed to drive common LCD displays; I2C only uses 2 instead of the 14 or 16 normally required. The backpack is designed to drive the many standard LCDs that have a 1 x 16-pin or 1 x 14-pin interface (HD44780 compatible). Adafruit supply a free software library and tutorial for getting started with the backpack on an Arduino. If you have another microcontroller please refer to the tutorial as it provides a lot of useful information. If you are feeling adventurous it's possible to use the backpack as an I/O expander by writing directly to the MCP23008 and 74HC595 chips, giving you 14 extra I/O pins.
Supplied as a fully assembled board plus a 1 x 2-pin terminal block and a 1 x 3-pin terminal block for you to solder on as required.
We supply a range of character displays which are HD44780 compatible.
*Customers looking to resell on eBay or Amazon should contact Adafruit directly.
