Several of these soldering stations were purchased for a group of beginners. After several weeks of regular use they have performed very well. The reasons for selecting these irons included: excellent price for the features and a stable stand plus wipe sponge built in so that beginners could use them safely. Some users prefered using kitchen metal scrunchie pot scourers to draw the iron tip through to clean the tip which did work well I must say, but never ever file the tips as that may damage a special coating. One word of warning though with regard to the variable temperature control. There was a tendency among our group to turn these up to full. This resulted in two builders lifting PCB tracks and damaging their printed circuit boards. Reading the instructions provided beforehand is a must. A wide range of various shaped replacement tips are available for under a pound each, Carefully consider purchasing these at the same time according to your needs. For example, if you will be soldering to large metal tags or vintage parts, you may find the wider 3mm spade shaped tip with 48 watts heat creates really effective soldered joints that a 25 watt iron with fine tip would really struggle to deliver. Similarly, the finer pointed tips will be effective on SMD parts soldered at a lower temperature. Finally we all make mistakes soldering don't we. Some of us burn our fingers too, or get a solder splash on our skin. Don't forget to have some burn cream and solder wick on hand at all times. And if you don't wear glasses, do purchase a pair of safety spectacles. For under three pounds, they are an excellent investment. Happy and safe soldering!
