What are Terminal Blocks?
Terminal blocks are modular, insulated devices that are used to connect one or more wires, usually to a Printed Circuit Board (PCB). They may be either direct connection to a PCB or via a plug to allow reliable disconnection. They are available with various clamping mechanisms and provide a safe and organised method to connect cables and wires to electrical circuits.
Rapid stocks many hundreds of terminal block products and it can be challenging to know where to start. Let’s look at these essential components and try to understand them a little.
Terminal blocks are relatively simple components, usually consisting of 3 principle parts:
Types of Terminal Blocks:
Various attributes define a terminal block. These are key factors in matching the component to your application:
Pitch
Pitch is the distance between poles and ensures your selected terminal block will fit your PCB or application. Commonly metric and imperial sizes, but traditionally both are expressed in millimetres.
Current and Voltage Ratings
To ensure the terminal block can handle the electrical current and voltage requirements of your application.
Connection Type
Screw terminals may suit many users, and different clamping mechanisms are available, such as cheaper wire protector types, or ‘rising clamp’ types for uses where repeated disconnection or higher ratings may be necessary. Screwless, push-in or spring clamp types are also available. Most do not require tools to fit the cable which may save installation time.
Wire Size and Type
Check the wire gauge (AWG) and whether the wires are solid or stranded. The terminal block should accommodate the wire size you are using.
Number of Connections or ‘Poles’
Determine the number of connection points you need. Terminal blocks are available from 1 pole to up to 36 poles.Mounting Orientation
Different options are available to connect wires that reach the PCB vertically, horizontally, or even 45 degrees. This makes installation easier and neater.
Standards and Certifications
Look for terminal blocks that comply with relevant standards (e.g., CE, UL, VDE) for safety and reliability.
