- Consists of strips of four different metals, which are fixed opposite each other on a circular wooden frame, with the strips meeting at the centre
- The outer ends of the metal strips have small recesses for holding paraffin wax
- By heating the centre where the four strips meet, the wax can be seen to melt at different times, governed by the conductivity of the four metals
- Strips are copper, iron, aluminium and brass
