Great Iron For The Price
Reviewed by: Miss Morgan Winters - Wednesday, February 1, 2017
I picked up one of these stations as my super cheap iron finally died. This station has a good weight to it and has rubber feet preventing it from sliding over your workbench. It has an LCD screen with big numbers allowing you to see the temperatures easily without having to stain your eyes. There is no backlight on the LCD which it could do with however I normally solder under a 70W HPS floodlight so that doesn't bother me. The iron holder is detachable which is very handy although there are no rubber feet on the holder which allows it to slide around easily. You can adjust the temperature in 1°C increments for precise control or by holding the up or down keys, one can set the temperature in 10°C increments. This unit have a temperature range of 300°C (min 150°C, max 450°C) allowing you to carry out a wide range of soldering tasks.
The iron's tip is not a solid bar type, it is more like a tube or socket type so the tips I was using on my old soldering iron won't fit, thus I would suggest that you pick up some Anvil tips here> https://www.rapidonline.com/bits-nozzles-tips?attributes={%22Brand%22:[%22Anvil%22]} You'll need the AV-N versions (AV-N16, AV-N26, AV-N36, AV-N46), however these tips are a very good price so you may want to pick up a couple.
The plastic shell of the controller and iron holder does feel a little on the cheap side but for £50, one can't expect it to be made from gold. That said, the plastic is quite thick so it seems to be able to handle day to day abuse.
The sponge tray is a nice touch and saves you loosing the sponge. Some people do prefer the metal wool type tip cleaners making this feature pointless but I personally prefer the sponge so I like it.
All in all, This soldering station is a great unit for the price and would be ideal for the hobbyist or a small lab or electronics company. I would give this a 4.5 due to no backlight, no rubber feet or pads on the iron holder and the feel of the plastic (rounded the 4.5 to a 5 due to Rapid's ratings system).
As per usual, faultless service from Rapid yet again :D .
