Measuring a capacitor's Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) is a great indicator of capacitor condition.
This ESR70 Gold version is an improved version of the Peak Atlas ESR Plus. It does everything the Plus version did, but does it better.
The Atlas ESR70 offers instant results, just connect the probes and press test. Using the supplied gold plated probes (removable), the Atlas ESR70 Gold can measure ESR down to a resolution of 0.01 ohms, up to 40 ohms. The probes are removable, allowing 2mm compatible probes to be fitted, if needed.
Innovative audible alerts give you instant feedback of the measurement results with further detail shown on the screen. The audible tones themselves are surprisingly pleasant, including Bell-like pings and also a Beep-Barp type tone for ESR that is likely to be too high. There is also a reassuring Blip when the measurement has started and completed. The audible alerts produced for various ESR levels allow you to perform many tests in succession without having to look at the display.
You can even use the Atlas ESR70 in-circuit, saving you the trouble of removing capacitors. When testing capacitors out-of-circuit, the unit will also display the capacitance. This clever instrument is a great way to check the physical condition of a wide range of capacitors. Elevated ESR is a sure indicator that the capacitor is failing and likely to dissipate heat and perform less like a capacitor and more like a resistor at high ripple currents. It can measure and compensate for the effects of measuring ESR in-circuit too, it also knows that you do not want to be hassled with capacitor polarity, just connect any way round. It's designed with the real world in mind. Some capacitors can be charged up, but the Atlas ESR70 does not mind. If your capacitor is charged, the unit will automatically carry out a controlled discharge procedure before measuring the capacitance and ESR.
The ESR70 automatically takes capacitive reactance into account, so even low value capacitors (down to 0.3uF) can have the ESR measured accurately.
