Aimed at Key Stage 3, the Rapid Audio Amplifier Project Kit provides teachers and students with a stimulating and inexpensive project through which to study the subject of amplification. The kits contain a comprehensive selection of components for schools working on audio related projects linked to the National Curriculum.

  • Students have the opportunity to build a small amplifier, which can be incorporated into a variety of product designs, e.g., as an amplifier for a personal CD / MP3 player so that they can share their music with their friends
  • The students have a number of design situations to select a starting point from, and they are provided with research topics and background material to help build understanding for their chosen design brief
  • The student notes provide material for students to explore how a range of simple amplifier circuits work
  • They also include guidance on the design and construction of speakers
  • To support students during the construction of the circuit, detailed instructions have been included on how to assemble the amplifier, and how to integrate the circuit into student designs
  • In addition, care has been taken, through extensive evaluation of the teaching material and PCB designs in schools, to ensure that the circuits are easy and robust enough for student manufacture
  • A detailed set of teacher notes is available which includes suggested lesson plans and mapping to the National Curriculum
  • The project notes have been designed for photocopying for class use

    Each kit contains the following:
  • TBA820M audio amplifier and IC socket
  • Resistors, capacitors, and LED
  • Switch and connecting jack socket
  • Connecting cable
  • Speaker and speaker cable
  • Battery clip
  • Printed circuit board

  • Each kit requires 1x PP3 battery (not included)
  • Supplied in a classpack of 20 kits (includes PCBs), in a 43 x 31 x 7cm Gratnells Tray with lid*
  • Tray colour may vary.

24 February 2019 Question by: Rapid Customer | Product code: 13-0106
Q. I see that the dimension for the amplifier / speaker is 66mm but would that be the size for the hole in the acrylic if the speaker is to be inserted? I want it to be precisely made so it doesn't look shoddy. Using laser cutter for acrylic
A. Hi Gemma, thank you for your question. If fitted from the rear, a 60mm hole would be needed.

18 July 2017 Question by: Rapid Customer | Product code: 13-0106
Q. Please is it possible to fit smaller diameter speakers with this Amp, e.g. RVFM LP50028A PAPER 8 Ohm 50mm Ultraslim Paper Speaker 0.2W (35-0128) If so can you provide a straight substitute within the kit?
A. Hi A Benton, thank you for your question. The kit will work with virtually any 8 ohm speakers, however, the lower the power handling the more likely the smaller speaker will distort or be damaged if over driven.

28 June 2017 Question by: Rapid Customer | Product code: 13-0106
Q. What is the speaker wire? Is there an order code for some extra, please.
A. Hi R Castley, thank you for your question. The speaker wire used in the kits is 01-0162.

24 May 2016 Question by: Rapid Customer | Product code: 13-0106
Q. is there an instruction booklet for the construction of the mono amplifier
A. Hi P Burton, thank you for your question. The teaching notes can be found here.

02 October 2015 Question by: Rapid Customer | Product code: 13-0106
Q. Can this be powered by a USB connection? and can a volume control be added. Thanks. Roger
A. Hi Roger, thank you for your question. The circuit will work at 5V, however, the current draw at loud volumes may overload an already used USB device so caution is recommended. The kit is ideally used with a mobile phone/MP3 player using its own volume control. You can employ a potentiometer between pins 3 and ground of the TBA820M replacing R3 in most cases this is not necessary.

20 June 2013 Question by: Rapid Customer | Product code: 13-0106
Q. Are the circuit boards pre-drilled?
A. Hi Steve. Thank you for your question. The supplied PCBs are pre-drilled and are available as spares as well in packs of 5 (70-0190).

13 October 2011 Question by: Rapid Customer | Product code: 13-0106
Q. Does this kit come with the jack leads shown in the box? Thanks Simon
A. Thanks for your enquiry - Yes the jack leads are included with this product.

This pack contains all the items required to make a fantastic little amplifier and speaker. The amplifier and speaker assembly can then be incorporated in a housing designed by the student, further extending the learning available. There is ample instructions available online to help the students achieve a good result and a worthwhile project to take home.

Quality Components, Great Instructions, Works Well

We bought a set for a community group kit building event. The kids loved the end result and most worked first time. They proudly went home to show parents and grandma what they had built, and it worked! This was due largely to excellent PCB design, comprehensive building instructions and quality components. This is not an Asian kit with parts and instructions missing! Can be built by a youngster from 6 to 16 with ease. We've been amazed at the quality of their soldering. Well recommended. We'll now look more closely at the other educational electronic kits that seem to be very reasonably priced. Thanks Rapid from all of us!
