The Franzis Bat Detector kit lets you listen to nature with modern electronics. Human ears cannot hear the cries of bats because they use high frequency sound well beyond our hearing range. This is where the bat detector comes in. It electronically translates the bat's high frequencies (up to 100kHz) to frequencies we can hear (20Hz to 20kHz). For ease of construction the kit contains a pre-assembled circuit board, you only have to solder a few elements yourself and wire up the microphone, loudspeaker and the controls. Due to modern integrated circuits, the detector will be very sensitive and powerful. Once the device is completed you can go out at dusk to see if you can find bats as they hunt using their ultrasonic echolocation. And because each species of bat uses a slightly different frequency and pattern you can try to identify them. This is a fun soldering project which opens up the fascinating world of bats.
Bats are not the only source of ultrasound, there are also many technical devices which do too. You will be surprised at the number of inaudible ultrasounds that surround us. Give your ears super powers.
Note: Suitable for children 14+.
