Great value and flexible board for classroom use
Reviewed by: Mr Pizzey - Wednesday, February 19, 2020
These boards are affordable, compact and exceptionally easy to solder, making them ideal for classroom use. The solder mask is unambiguous and clear to read, with all component values shown. We use lead free solder (Rapid Lead-Free Solder Wire 22SWG 0.7mm 100g Reel Order Code: 85-1166) with Antex soldering irons (Antex S48J4H8 CS18W 230V Lead Free Soldering Iron With Silicone Cable & 13A Plug Order Code: 85-1135) and find the solder flows very freely onto every pad, even on older boards that may have been handled repeatedly. The boards and pads are strong enough to withstand moderate amounts of overheating due to poor soldering technique from inexperienced students.
The PCB is designed for all components to be placed on-board but it's easy to solder in wires to extend the switches and LEDs off-board in a student-designed project. You can see an example here https://youtu.be/og_nYBWNuhM and I have even soldered up several of these PCBs with an off-board ZIF socket to make convenient programmers for my students to use.
