This device is a miniaturised receiver for infrared remote control systems. A PIN diode and preamplifier are mounted on the lead frame and the epoxy package is utilised as an IR filter. The demodulated output signal can directly be decoded by a microprocessor. Deisgned for use in infrared PCM remote control systems.
Q. Hi,
I have used the IR LED 58-0445 with the 55-0905 receiver. The IR LED 58-0445 is discontinued, what would be good alternative?
A. Hi, thanks for your question.
58-0320 is a suitable alternative:

Supply current is actually 1.2mA typical, not 5mA , so this part is even better than the Rapid abridged data shows.

After using a simple Photo Diode, i only got a few feet from that using the same IR emitters. When using this 38Khz receiver, i had to build a 555 timer to generate the carrier wave for the transmitters... after this, i combined the IR and 38Khz reciever and got 60 feet WITHOUT lenses! Ill have to say tho the data sheet appears to say ACTIVE low output, however on building and testing, this appears to be Active HIGH until receiving the pulses! other than a minor correction (inverter) the item really WORKS! and VERY well!.. Very impressed with its ability to see IR! as a test i covered the ir transmitters with white paper and STILL the IR reciever Accepted the data pulses! Fantastic Kit!
